In
Darwin a commemorative Pathway has been created in Damoe-Ra
Park, which is situated on the Esplanade opposite Parliament
House and leads down to the Deck
Chair Cinema. Damoe-Ra Park is a fitting venue for
the Tribute pathway. It was a central and essential
site for the traditional inhabitants, the Larrakia people,
and the early European settlers. Damoe-Ra was named
by Larrakia elder Topsy Secretary, referring to a natural
spring located a little further north, on Lameroo Beach.
In 1992 it was chosen as the site to commemorate the
significant role women have played in the Northern Territory.
Territory women artists are responsible for the design
and development of all Tribute features.
On
July 6th, 2004 the mosaic pathway in Damoe-Ra Park which
commemorates the historical contribution of women in
the Northern Territory was opened. The unique pathway,
which will be revealed during a Picnic in the Park,
recognises the 21 recipients of the Tribute to Territory
Women.
