George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens

The Darwin Botanic Gardens are located 2km from the city centre.

They have displays or orchids that thrive in the humid conditions as well as palms, mangroves and every species of baobab. There is also an informative visitors centre and Aboriginal plant trails. From 1970 until 1990 the Darwin Botanic Gardens were under the care of George Brown who later resigned to take up the office of Lord Mayor of Darwin.

The Darwin Botanic Gardens have historic significance as the site of major botanical and agricultural activity since 1886, for their association with the Holtze family and George Brown.

Wild bush turkeys gaze on the lawns and the locals often excerise and wlak thru the manacured gardens.

Maurice Holtze was appointed Government Gardener in 1878 and successfully curated the "Experimental Nursery" and gardens first at a site near the Gaol in Fannie Bay and, after 1886, at the current site.

Festivals and Celebrations held in the park vary from the Christmas "carols by Candleight' to the youth inspired 'Bass in the Grass' (See festivals and events)
