This site was created for the
promotion of Darwin as a tropical tourist destination for clients of our Travel
Agency which specialises in 4WD Rentals and land based Northern Territory tours
and safaris who are coming to Darwin for their holidays. A easy to navigate site
to find your way around Darwin with lots of photos and also to get a glimpse at
the way we live, our lifestyle, the
folks who helped make Darwin what it is today a 'Tropical Paradise' (in our
mind's) and how privileged we are to live here. We pay tribute also to the Consuls
and Honorary Consuls who have helped our overseas clients over the years.
The
thing is the site has grown to the extent many other folks out there are having
a gander. So
folks throughout the site you will see references to our travel clients.
A
Little History
Port Darwin was discovered by Lieutenant John
Lort Stokes and named by Captain J.C. Wickham when, travelling in the HMS Beagle,
they passed the harbour area in 1839. Now apparently Capt. Wickham named the area
after Charles Darwin who had once sailed in the HMS Beagle. In 1869 it was renamed
Palmerston but in 1911 it reverted back to being named Darwin.
Did you
know the British tried to established settlements first at Escape Cliffs, Port
Essington and Fort Dundas on Melville Island though they failed.
Bill's
Reminising
Bill
Hodge is a Darwin identity who recalls Darwin back to the 1950's till today. He
has a wealth of little historic gems about the town and locals he shares with
you. So look for the 'Bill's Reminising' tags
as you go along.
Slang
& Lingo
Why
not learn our lingo if your visiting - Our team have searched high and low to
find the old and current lingo/slang used in the Top End. Strange how people like
Bill uses words we never heard of and visa a versa. So not all slang is used now
days but is fun
to look at.
Service
Votes
Our
clients over the years always ask - where is the best barber, the best place to
buy camping gear, what is the house prices like, who is famous in Darwin. Now
we decided instead of remembering all this some 300 times a year when we actually
meet up with our clients we thought we would put it on one of our websites. Now
Marg suggested we use the phrase 'Local Standard' as we have found travelling
around the world many times it varies from country to country. So the votes are
suggestion of the standard's we would expect from the best service, value and
range of service and goods available in Darwin today. We have chosen mainly businesses
that our clients have repeatedly asked for over the last few years but we are
expanding that list.
'Whose
Who'
Whilst
meeting with many of our clients (for example at the Parap market) we often see
well known Darwin identities walk passed. Our clients just adore the fact that
we have so many notable, respected and even famous folks amongst us. So at the
request of a few clients (who all did lengthy searches on the internet before
they came to Darwin) we decided after much delibration to compile a ''Whose
Who' list of the past (so to speak -don't take it literally) and a 'Whose
Who' list of the present. We have only just started this list in mid December
but it is growing daily. If you have someone you feel should be on the list, please
see the page first, read the criteria and then email us.

The city has a population of
around 120,000, made up of over 60 different nationalities. Half of the population
is under 30 years old, creating a vibrant, multicultural society.
Darwin
is a harmonious mix of three distinct cultural groups – the Australian Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander, Asian and European. It has important links with the
Asian region, being as close to Singapore and Manila as it is to Sydney and Melbourne.
The area’s main industries include
mining and the development of petroleum resources, cattle, tourism, horticulture
and fishing. Every year, tens of thousands of international tourists visit Darwin
and the surrounding wilderness areas, including the World Heritage-Listed Kakadu
National Park.

Darwin - Darwin in Northern Territory Australia
Darwin:
The Capital city of Northern Territory, Australia is Darwin. Now Darwin is closer
to Jakarta than to Sydney, and also closer to Singapore than to Melbourne. It
is not really a suprise then that Darwinians looks to Asia for travel, influences
in dress and food as much as it looks south to the rest of Australia. Darwin's
proximity and relationship such as its sister city program with the Northern Territory's
northern neighbours is reflected in Darwin's cosmopolitan and relaxed tropical
atmosphere and culture.

Welcome
to our Northern Territory. The clip shows mostly the Top End with snipets of Central
Oz. There are quite a few snipets of Northern Territory in Arnhemland here that
you may not be able to travel too though here you can get the chance to feel what's
it like there.

I
have lived here (on and off) since 1988 and it has to be one of a few cities that
I have known that every one of every religon and race seems to live in harmony.
We are known as Darwinian's and generally are hard working on the one side but
laid back and relaxed after hours on the other. When I first arrived here in 1988
it was a case of anything I wanted or ordered was "yah mate - it will be
here tomorrow ( 2 weeks later I was still waiting). Now Darwin has changed and
with service at the level of major southern cities service levels and products
are found to be of a premium.
There
is one major problem when you visit Darwin. That is you will want to stay; it
has happened to everyone we know. It's a great city and even better life style.
Imagine many things that other capital cities have as infrastructure well we have
too and it's all around 15 mins drive from one point to the other.
